Cloudy Bay's pinot noir is a real milestone in Marlborough's wine history: in a wine region previously dominated by one-dimensional sauvignon blanc, the variety found a new home and, in addition to broadening the selection, became one of the cornerstones of the New World pinot style. From the difficult 2022 vintage, the pinot noir from the finest harvests of the southern Mustang, Delta, and Barrack areas is macerated on the skins for 21 days in a gravity cellar, and after malolactic fermentation, it is aged for 11 months in French oak barrels (30% new). It has an undeniable New World style with Old World characteristics: an expressive aroma of smoke and gunpowder, rose petals and cherries, with polished tannins, berries, delicate barrel spices and vanilla on the palate.
