The Maremma lies along the Tuscan coast south of Livorno. Over the past quarter century, this region has become one of Italy's most prominent wine regions. It was here that Angelo Gaja started a new venture and launched the Ca'Marcanda winery. His goal was to bring the culture and approach of Piedmont to the Maremma landscape. The soil structure provides the perfect foundation for international red varieties. In 1996, Gaja began planting 150 hectares of vineyards, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but also Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
