Bin 28 is one of the iconic representatives of Australian Shiraz, captivating with its rich, mature, and spicy character. It was first produced in 1959, exclusively from the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, which Penfolds purchased in 1945. Today, it is produced from a blend of several wine regions: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, and Clare Valley. Thanks to the excellent weather conditions of the 2021 vintage, the grapes were of outstanding quality and abundant in yield. It was aged for twelve months in American oak barrels, 7% of which were new, thus preserving its deep and full character, while its structure remained fruity, smooth, and balanced. Its color is deep black with a garnet rim. Its aroma is intense and complex. In addition to black fruits (blackberries, blackcurrants), umami notes also appear, such as roasted meat, dark soy sauce, and dried herbs. The aroma is rounded off by the floral notes of violets. The flavor reveals black chocolate, rum, raisins, and espresso, as well as sour cherry and licorice. The acids are lively, the tannins are firm, and the oak is perfectly integrated. Fruitiness dominates. The finish is long, mineral and elegant, lingering long after the sip.
