Tignanello is the shining star of Tuscan and universal wine culture, a point of orientation and reference. When the first vintage was made in 1971, the goal was to modernize Chianti, which was made with outdated methods and provincial tastes compared to the world's elite. To achieve this, they called upon the expertise and technology of Bordeaux, then the leading wine region. Since white varieties were still mandatory in Chianti at the time, they were replaced with Cabernet, allowing the highly positioned Tignanello to be marketed only as a table wine. The 'super Tuscan' name, which achieved great success, actually refers to this: outside of origin protection. Buoyed by Tignanello's success, almost every serious Chianti winery created its own super Tuscan, and when authorities belatedly revised the wine law after decades, most proudly retained the status of a regional wine that expresses their outsider status.
